However, the prevailing opinion about the Australian origin of the actor is erroneous, since the place of his birth is the city of Peekskill of the American state of New York. His father, a railwayman, and his mother, an opera singer, Irish Catholics, had 11 children (Mel was the sixth of them). When his family changed their place of residence, moving to Australia, Mel was 12 years old.
